Reg Spurr, Having and losing
The 1st volume in the series Testimonials series includes the account of British soldier Reg Spurr from his participation in the Battle of Crete. Spurr remained on the island from late October 1940 to late May 1941.
Excerpt from the book:
[…] One day there was a terrible bombing. I think they were so angry that they decided to level the town. The Stukas were diving and diving, screaming, and the whole town seemed to be exploding. They must have spotted our position. One bomb after another was falling on us, but none of them hit us. One fell outside the door. I will never understand how no one was killed. Corporal Pascoe shouted: “Let’s go to the shelter!” I only remember dust and noise. I heard the alarms going off. I don’t know why I did it, but even though I couldn’t see anything through the dust and smoke, I felt for all the alarms I could hear going off and turned them off. […]
