[…] These villages gave us the greatest support, we always had them as asylum, and many hunted Cretans found safe refuge on the wild slopes of Mount Kedros that rose above the Land of the Lotus Eaters - Kedros with its gurgling waters, with its one hundred and one springs, one hundred known to men and the one hundred and first, if you could find it, with the Immortal Water.[…]

Our biggest party in the Land of the Lotus Eaters took place at Christmas 1942, when Paddy, Xan and I met in Gerakari and proceeded, from village to village and from house to house, to the Upper Town.[…] This was the height of the hospitality of the Land of the Lotus Eaters. Two years later, all these beautiful villages were piles of ruins. The Germans destroyed them, just before their retreat, and killed many of our friends.[…]
