The artist Sophia Portalaki- Armaou, was born in 1947 in Heraklion, Crete. After an early apprenticeship in icon-painting at the age of fourteen she pursued studies in painting and the art of mosaic at the Athens School of Fine Arts and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1965-1973). The painter’s unceasing interest in the art of icon-painting, led her to the in-depth study of the work of the great masters of the Cretan School of painting (15th and 16th c.). Icons by Sophia Portalaki-Armaou may be found in collections and orthodox churches in Greece, Germany, France, Holland America and Italy. Since 1998 the artist collaborates with various Greek museums, creating copies of icons of the byzantine and post-byzantine era.

The painter and iconographer Sofia Portalaki-Armaou was born in 1947 in Heraklion, Crete. Her involvement with iconography began at the age of fourteen. After completing her studies in painting and mosaic at the Athens School of Fine Arts and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1965-1973), she has been professionally involved in painting and the art of iconography. In her artistic career to date, she has meticulously studied the works of iconographers, mainly of the Cretan School of the 15th and 16th centuries. Her icons can be found in collections and churches in Greece, Germany, France, the Netherlands, America, and Italy. From 1998 to the present, she has collaborated with Greek museums, creating copies of icons from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period.
